A BS 9251 Category 3 system is a type of fire sprinkler system for larger residential buildings like student accommodation, dormitories, and residential care homes with more than ten residents. These systems are designed to be higher-performance than Categories 1 and 2, requiring calculations for 2–4 sprinkler heads to activate, a water flow of approximately 168–200 litres per minute, and a minimum storage tank capacity of around 6–9 cubic meters to provide at least 30 minutes of operation.
